The old Housatonic and N Y & N E single track lines between Danbury and what is now known as Berkshire Jct., were changed to double track operation. The busy depot hummed day and night with the activity of both passenger and freight trains from Denver, Durango, Santa Fe, Salida and Creede arriving and departing daily. The loggers used Rivers and large streams where available to float the logs to a mill location, but in most of the heavily timbered valleys of the, the streams were not large enough for an effective log drive. For the next centuray, little was done to expand the railroad network in Maine, and by 1924 there were just over 2,000 miles of track within the state. In 1990 the N&W was merged into the SR and the name of the SR was changed to the Norfolk Southern Railway, a subsidiary of the Norfolk Southern Corporation.
