Why am I doing it? Will it help anyone? Will there be an unintended emotional cost? I’m not certain. One important reason for telling my story at this moment in my life is that I’m convinced the present system of family law seriously misunderstands the significance of violence and its catastrophic effect on children and their mothers. Children are harmed if orders are not safe. People are dying because courts have found it is in a child’s best interest to spend time with both parents, even violent ones.

The weather was crisp and clear when I arrived to relieve the tired but cheerful volunteer who’d attended the booth all morning. There was always a pleasant atmosphere at polling booths, with much light-hearted banter among volunteers, whether they were working for the Labor and Liberal parties, the Citizens Group or independents. We tossed around political opinions without taking things too seriously, acknowledging that we shared much common ground. We’d smile broadly when prospective voters took our how-to-vote cards, then wink and nod to our fellow-workers.

She wrote wonderful speeches on the back of an envelope or serviette, but mostly she just winged it.
